Wondang Catholic Church

Wondang Catholic Church

The design intended to preserve the sensation of a place where quietude and clamor coexist. It grappled with expressing the relationship between the sacred and the secular, inside and outside, prioritizing “sanctity amid noise” over perfect unity. If the depth of Gothic cathedral architecture were transformed from space to volume, it might manifest as the desire to condense it into a single, expressionless massive box. Internal spaces were envisioned to let light provide all answers, while shared external spaces faced limitations in the architect’s role, leading to efforts to create architecture that coexists with relational spaces without walls. By carving pathways within the building to connect internal and external realms, the design aimed to realize in modern architecture the qualities derived from alleyway culture.
