Korea University Guro Hospital

Korea University Guro Hospital

Hospital design is purely functional. Speaking from a functional standpoint, it is not architecture but machinery — even extremely complex machinery. Even the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) concept alone encompasses nearly ten aspects, making it engineering in a way. Yet humans are too significant a factor; reducing it solely to that perspective often leads to failure.

Dim, gloomy hospitals are utterly rejected. Efforts were made to ensure ample daylight and fresh air throughout. Dramatic architecture is not particularly required. A convenient, cheerful environment that is easily expandable suffices. Particular emphasis was placed on interiors. Construction began in 1981 for a 309-bed facility, with completion and opening in 1983.
