The Yonsei University Severance New Hospital project started with the modern Western hospital Gwanghyewon, the first of its kind in Korea. It became a large-scale architectural project featuring 54,000 pyeong (approx. 178,000 sq. m.) and 1,000 beds, unprecedented at the time of design. Beginning with a master plan in 1993, the original design phase took about two and a half years, but the total design period extended close to 10 years due to multiple revisions during construction. The construction period lasted about 4 years and 8 months. The original design was a collaboration between Junglim Architecture and the U.S. firm Ellerbe Becket, combining over 20 years of hospital design expertise from Junglim with Ellerbe Becket’s specialized healthcare planning and innovative ideas.
The New Severance Hospital pursued the goals of being state-of-the-art, comfortable, efficient, and future-oriented. Unlike previous hospitals, it was planned as a full-fledged “specialized outpatient center–focused” hospital, around which internal circulation and massing design were developed.
