The Administration Building was designed to address the site’s dual conditions — an expansive southern panorama overlooking half of Seoul, against three sides shrouded in lush forested hills — alongside its dual role as chairman’s office and foundation administrative headquarters, while preserving Ewha Womans University’s distinctive architectural context and incorporating hierarchical expression befitting a foundation office. On a 45m by 110m site with approximately 25m elevation change, the buildings are arranged in a U-shape enclosing a central courtyard to maximize enjoyment of the surrounding landscape.
The mixed program of disparate functions was spatially organized on plan: the public zone housing foundation offices; private spaces for the chairman and directors; assembly areas like the grand conference room; faculty research offices; and guest accommodations. With functional priorities and natural conditions considered, similar uses were grouped into distinct wings flanking inner and outer courtyards in a modified courtyard typology.
The west face, unfolding from the main entrance, assumes frontality, while the south face visible from the conference room courtyard serves as another façade. The west façade modifies the main Ewha building’s exterior, featuring large flanking gables and a triangular entry motif; the southward prospect from the grand courtyard below exudes the head family home’s dignity.
