Ewha Womans University Central Library

Ewha Womans University Central Library

Junglim Architecture aimed to prioritize daylight over dim electric lighting, natural ventilation over air conditioning, and organic, naturally arising forms over standardized shapes in the Ewha Womans University Library design. This approach stemmed from past experiences where university libraries often neglected maintenance and management aspects.
Light streaming down from the skylight centered over the circulation and catalog areas enlivens the library’s interior spaces, emphasizing its role as a place for study. The entire library operates in an open-shelf system; taking advantage of the sloping site, the main entrance is located on the second floor. The lower level houses an open reading room, while the upper level contains controlled open-shelf reading rooms.
