The Sunkyong Group’s research complex was planned as a large-scale campus spanning 175,000 pyeong (about 578,512 sq. m.), comprising a total of 14 structures including three research buildings and four demonstration labs. The Yukong Daedeok Technology Institute (Sunkyong Group’s comprehensive research center), responsible for advanced technology development in energy, chemicals, and environment, needed to address two key requirements in the design: minimizing initial investment costs through phased expansions and enhancing adaptability and flexibility to changing conditions. The essential architectural principle of the Sunkyong R&D Center design was focused on managing future expansions and modifications economically and systematically, prioritizing the order of processes over formal order. This involved steps such as module determination, energy supply and treatment methods, securing interactive spaces, and program adjustments. During design development, consultations with R&D center consultant EWA guided a program-centric approach to establish a basic prototype, followed by modifications mindful of the site environment and auxiliary facilities.
