To support the growth of heavy chemical industries, the government embarked on developing large-scale coastal industrial complexes. Given the nature of heavy chemicals, plans were made to develop industry-specific zones by selecting locations with advantageous physical environments for raw material production; among these, the chemical industrial complexes were designated for Ulsan and Yeocheon (Yeosu). At the time, Chungju Fertilizer led joint ventures with domestic and international petrochemical firms, and drawing on Kim Jungsik’s experience at Chungju Fertilizer, Junglim Architecture secured numerous related factory and staff housing projects. Staff housing complexes built near and mid-distance from the industrial parks were to resolve residential needs for factory workers, technical managers, employees, and their families. The Hanyang Chemical Yeosu Staff Housing Complex, planned in 1977, is now known as Hanwha Solutions Apartments in Soho-dong, Yeosu.
The complex includes 13 row houses, along with garages, guard posts, gymnasium, woodworking and printing workshops, children’s playgrounds, and other auxiliary facilities. It was laid out to make all residential units on the higher western elevation overlook the front South Sea, while welfare facilities like the community center, swimming pool, and gymnasium were placed on the lower eastern terrain — zoned by use while securing ocean vistas. A natural sloped green buffer approximately 5 meters wide from the coastal road ensures visual privacy from the road toward the complex.
