Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building

Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building

The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, originating from the Hansung Chamber of Commerce established in 1884, is a private economic organization with over 100 years of history. Its purpose is to comprehensively improve and develop commerce and industry, while promoting balanced growth of the national economy and local communities. With chambers established in over 150 countries and 65 major cities nationwide, it required a place to lead the industry into the advanced business era of the 21st century.

Around the site was the historic Sungnyemun Gate, Korea’s National Treasure No. 1, as well as several zones planned for redevelopment. The design was planned to harmonize with this cultural asset, coexist with new buildings to be constructed nearby, and maintain its unique identity as the representative chamber of commerce and industry for Korea’s economy. The spatial arrangement follows the axis of Sungnyemun Gate and the main circulation path, placing large and small rooms on the lower floors that can hold meetings or conferences according to size and capacity, and arranging office spaces on the upper floors. The side facing the city incorporates multi-level landscaping plans to provide an open and inviting space for citizens. The use of Korea’s durable granite finish expresses the progressive spirit of “white robe,” contrasting with blue reflective glass to create an elegant blue-white harmony.
