Ewha Woman’s University Mokdong Hospital

Ewha Woman's University Mokdong Hospital

Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital was designed as a modern hospital facility equipped with comfortable environment and state-of-the-art medical equipment, intended to serve alongside the existing Dongdaemun Hospital as the core hub for clinical care, medical research, and education.

Given the site’s somewhat constrained physical conditions and surrounding environment, the plan separated research facilities (research wing) from clinical facilities (hospital proper), positioning the research wing near existing educational facilities (Yangjeong High School) while setting back the inpatient wing to the side to mitigate odors from the Anyang Stream, road noise, and visual impacts on nearby apartment residents. Vertical and horizontal elements were introduced to buffer and mediate the nearby apartment complexes and high school, with low-rise sections providing sculptural stability while accommodating the hospital’s diverse functions.

Anticipating a final capacity of 800 beds, the design incorporated provisions for vertical and horizontal expansions, as well as flexible internal reconfiguration, by including “soft spaces” adjacent to key functional areas to enable adaptability to future changes and growth. Departing from the typical stark white of conventional hospitals, the scheme harmonized with the vibrant colors of the Mokdong residential district while introducing a fresh image for modern healthcare — employing Ewha Womans University’s signature green as an accent against neutrals to create a unique identity for Mokdong Hospital. The rooftop tower was configured to accommodate future three-story additions (totaling 12 floors) while introducing skyline variation.
