The CJ Namsan Headquarters (currently CJ The Center) is located between Seoul Station and Namsan in the Yangdong District Urban Environment Improvement Zone, adjacent to Baekbeom Plaza Park and the Millennium Hilton Seoul (scheduled for demolition). In February 1995, CheilJedang Co., Ltd. purchased the building and used it as the CJ Group headquarters. For improving the aging building, embodying the symbolic image of the headquarters, and creating a new work environment, a design competition was held in 2016 to select a designer, leading to a renovation project.
After winning the competition, Junglim Architecture developed several design alternatives following the directions requested by CJ Group, ultimately deciding on the classic design that differentiates the building from the surrounding structures. Notably, the upper floors prioritize the offices’ interior environment, with large arches designed on the façades to maximize classic elements, giving the building a distinctive character.
