Located within the Goyang-Jichuk Public Housing District, Westay Jichuk is the second cooperative-type public-supported private rental housing project undertaken as a pilot initiative by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. As with Westay Byeollae, the project was carried out in collaboration with the social developer group The Ham SD.
Taking advantage of its site conditions — adjacent to the Bukhansan Dulle-gil Trail and Nogosan Natural Park — the residential buildings are oriented southeastward to offer every unit a view of the surrounding greenery. A spacious central plaza was also created within the complex, inviting the landscape into the community. The ground-level deck plan utilizes the southwest–northeast level difference of the terrain, minimizing soil removal while efficiently securing space for ancillary facilities and underground parking.
The most significant community facility in Westay is a space conceptualized around “sharing,” in which residents directly participated in both the design process and program planning. Facilities such as a shared library, communal kitchen, cooperative childcare center, and workshops are arranged along the elongated site, forming an organic connection among the housing blocks.
