The Uiwang-Gunpo-Ansan public housing district is one of the third-phase new town public housing districts. It was designated as a new public land in August 2021 as part of measures to expand housing supply in the metropolitan area, and officially announced in June 2023. The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) held an open competition for the “Urban Master Plan for the Uiwang-Gunpo-Ansan Public Housing District,” soliciting ideas for the district’s urban master plan and implementation measures for realizing multi-faceted spatial planning strategies in its specialized zones. Junglim Architecture’s master plan, drafted in February 2024, was selected, and the project is currently underway. Approximately 5.97 square kilometers of land will accommodate about 41,000 housing units, housing roughly 100,000 residents.
Junglim’s proposal focused on organizing the urban spatial structure based on several key points. The plan aims to establish the third-phase new town district’s character as a hub that interconnectedly develops the urban features of Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan. It also emphasizes building a regional transport network connecting the Suwon-Gwangmyeong Highway, Yeongdong Highway, West Coast Expressway, Banwol Station, and Uiwang Station to enhance accessibility and usability. Considering the long-preserved natural ecosystems within the greenbelt zone, the plan proposes creating a green and park network centered around Mount Gubongsan, as well as waterfront ecological areas linked with Lake Wangsong, to protect ecological environments. In terms of urban functions, it maximizes land use efficiency by promoting mixed development around stations like Banwol and Uiwang, and by introducing specialized zones that harness each city’s resources. The overall goal is to create a multi-faceted urban space where nature, people, daily life, and the environment coexist harmoniously.
