The ST Songeun Building located in Cheongdam-dong, a representative commercial district in Gangnam, integrates a space of art and culture with the corporate headquarters that supports its foundation. Designed in collaboration with the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, the building aims to be a public art space and cultural hub for Korean contemporary artists to expand onto the international stage. Situated on Dosandaero Thoroughfare, an area dominated by low-rise buildings but allowing denser development along the street, the building’s stable triangular mass and structure result from analyzing environmental, cultural, and regulatory factors.
The building features a publicly open space and garden behind the first-floor entry facing the main road, enhancing accessibility. Inside, a curved ramp introduces light and sound from street level down to the underground gallery and creates a path connecting to the second-floor gallery. The building houses exhibition spaces of various sizes, a sloped ramp-linked underground vehicle entrance, offices with panoramic upper-floor views, and a top-floor event hall — all possessing organic forms. Made of concrete with distinctive larch plywood formwork imprinted with pine patterns, this concrete structure is set to become a landmark in Seoul that inspires architecture and art communities alike.
