Nongshim Baeksan Artesian Water Plant, Mt. Baekdu

Nongshim Baeksan Artesian Water Plant, Mt. Baekdu

The Baeksan Artesian Water Plant project in Erdaobaihezhen, Yanbian, China is a newly constructed facility for bottling pristine spring water from Baekdusan Mountain. The design focuses on embodying a “clean plant” image that aspires to global standards and creating a functional, efficient, and advanced plant. The architectural concept embodies three directions: “Frontier” that leads urban value, “Community” that engages with the local society, and “Innovation” that prepares for an eco-friendly future. Because the plant was intended from the outset to promote Nongshim’s brand and product images, every aspect of the design was planned with exceptional attention to detail, differing from typical production facilities.

The overall site layout places the railway at the core, with production and logistics facilities to the north, and the office building and public areas to the south. The program consists of three principal buildings: production, office, and accommodation. The production building’s form evokes the flow of Baekdusan Mountain and its water, and the region’s prolonged frigid season is addressed by sloped roofs on all structures. Both the office and accommodation buildings are arranged to wrap around the entrance plaza, with their façades and plans also reflecting the fluidity of water, enhanced by vertical patterns and stone accents on the façades to increase openness and gravitas. A bridge was planned to connect the offices and production plant, simultaneously considering visitor routes, staff convenience, and sanitary separation for the production line.
