The second building of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST), the KOFST Welfare Complex (Science Plaza), is a project to integrate, redevelop, and expand the existing Main Building, Annex, and New Building. It aims to establish a venue for knowledge exchange and communication among scientists, experts from various fields, and the public, securing symbolic value as a public building representing the science and technology community. Functionally, the project focuses on enhancing connectivity and operational convenience among facilities, organizing mixed vehicle and pedestrian traffic flows, and designing a building that harmonizes with the existing New Building while expressing a leading-edge image. The site planning addresses energy considering wind direction and view, frontality from the main road, connections with the New Building, and activation of the neighborhood commercial district.
The building is largely divided into the office zone and the public open zone with sectional zoning ensuring independence between both zones. Masses are separately optimized for each facility — public service zone, office, shared office, convention hall, and neighborhood facility — to improve operational efficiency. An open plaza accessible from adjacent roads and connected green and rest spaces to Yeoksam Park provide an expanded open space for the public. The façade employs vertical patterns that intuitively metaphorize science and technology, favoring wind and view conditions. Materials such as vertical louvers, metal panels, and low-E double glazing are used for economic and maintenance efficiency.
