The Dankook University Yulgok Memorial Library is an architectural development of the academic tradition of Yulgok Yi I, a Neo-Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. Specifically, the building is characterized by a moderate formal aesthetic, which is distinguished from the colorful ornamentation that appears in Buddhist architecture, and an organic circulation that is reminiscent of the garden-entrance-courtyard-room spatial flow of traditional architecture. Yulgok’s theory of harmony, which is the harmony between the rationality of all things and the realization of it, was spread through the language of Modernism within the modern spatial system of the library – this is one way to understand the tradition and modernity of Korean architecture in the late 20th century.
