Dongdaemun Stadium is a place where Seoul’s past, present, and future coexist, hosting diverse events day and night. Taking into account the complex and congested conditions—including the 35-meter-wide Heunginjimun-ro separating the old and new city districts, the revitalization of the Euljiro Underground Shopping Center, and the 600-year-old Seoul City Wall—we began by moving all programs underground to open up the surface area. DDM SQUARE serves as an open space for popular culture, entertainment, recreation, sports, leisure, and fashion, expanding Dongdaemun’s locational potential.
It features “Tribunes,” a reinterpretation of the existing Dongdaemun Stadium bleachers, and the ‘Super Concourse,’ which integrates the mega-structure WDPC to program shopping and exhibition functions alongside circulation routes. From the ‘Wall Museum’—a dramatic restoration of Seoul’s historic city walls that appears to float—visitors can overlook the ‘Flex Park,’ where various events take place outdoors while indoor exhibition spaces are planned. All programs surrounding the two existing stadiums are arranged linearly along the ‘Möbius Concourse.’ WDPC will embody the daily life of the current Dongdaemun Stadium while elevating fashion, sports, music, leisure, street culture, exhibitions, and design to a higher level.
