Chungwoon Church

Chungwoon Church

The floating mass of light represents the image of an open church spreading the Gospel in all directions.

The spiral-shaped mass and the outdoor deck extending from it form a continuous space that rises from the site and ascends toward the sky, symbolizing the church’s pastoral policies of growth and mission. The light, transparent, amorphous mass—which appears to float atop the massive base—serves as a visual focal point and a nighttime landscape feature. The diverse architectural vistas visible from both inside and outside the building, as well as from the city, facilitate the church’s expansion into the urban fabric and foster a connection with its surroundings.

We sought to preserve the 30-year-old ginkgo tree at the site’s entrance as an architectural element and to reinterpret the materials of the existing church in order to reconnect with the church’s historical legacy.
