Daesung Timber (now Dongwha Enterprise), a local Incheon company, was a wood products specialist that established and operated its first large-scale plywood factory in Manseok-dong. In Korea, plywood began being supplied to the UN forces stationed in Korea from 1957, emerging as a major export item that rapidly grew to account for over 10% of total exports within a decade. As U.S. orders surged for Daesung Timber as well, the company secured a government loan to build a new factory on Wolmido Island.
After opening in 1967, Junglim Architecture Research Institute undertook projects such as the Doosan Building design competition and the Chungju Fertilizer dormitory design before securing the Daesung Wood Wolmi Plywood Factory commission. Completed in 1970, the factory spanned a 40,000-pyeong (about 132,231 sq. m.) site with a building footprint of approximately 8,000 pyeong (about 26,446 sq. m.) — an impressive scale for the time. Thereafter, the firm continued with factory projects for Chungju Fertilizer, Yeongnam Chemical, Honam Petrochemical, Korea Pipe, and Maeil Dairies.
