Jeju Stone Park

Jeju Stone Park

The Jeju Stone Culture Park is a project designed to create a world-class comprehensive cultural and tourism complex that showcases Jeju’s unique stones and folk artifacts. From 1999 to 2020, Jeju City developed a plan to build the Stone Culture Park on a beautiful 30,000-pyeong site, and to date, the Stone Museum, the Five Hundred Generals Gallery, and the Jeju Traditional Village have all been established. The second phase of the Stone Culture Park project centers on Seolmundae Halmang, a figure linked to the myth of Jeju’s creation, aiming to encapsulate Jeju’s unique stone culture and natural environment. Seolmundae Halmang is a giant woman who gave birth to Jeju and, along with the legend of the 500 Generals, represents the origin of Jeju’s stone-related culture. Jeju’s essence, Jeju’s nature, Jeju’s landscape. The goal was to create an exhibition hall that best embodies the spirit of Jeju through the minimal interventions necessary to encompass all these elements. To achieve this, JUNGLIM Architecture moved beyond the initial master plan—which had focused on visualizing the figure itself—and instead interpreted the space as one that encompasses the entirety of Jeju, based on various legends associated with Seolmundae Halmang. Furthermore, the exhibition hall was designed as an emotional space where visitors can directly experience areas related to the legends, placing emphasis on reflecting on their mythological significance. Ultimately, it will become a representative cultural space imbued with the life and spirit of Seolmundae Halmang, and based on this, it will be remembered as a unique and globally unparalleled exhibition hall where Jeju’s distinctive scale and natural landscapes harmoniously blend together.
