As the birthplace of the independence movement during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, Chungdong First Methodist Church is an example of a project in which issues such as the historical significance of the site and the conservation of the existing structure played a major force behind the design. The building is characterized by the creation of spatial rhythm through subtle geometric differences, while at the same time achieving harmony with the existing structure. The interior sanctuary is characterized as a space for conversation between the pastor and congregants, which does not distinguish between the pulpit and the seating area – this reflects Junglim’s continued interest in architecturally devising spaces for religious activities and materializing community spirit.
