The design embodies the mission of Severance Medical Center: to free humanity from illness and suffering through God’s love by creating spaces of healing. Before planning a state-of-the-art medical facility in Yongin, it was necessary to consider the strengths of the site and determine what features such a facility should possess. Yongin’s regional characteristics and its status as a newly developed planned city led us to consider its transportation network and its role as a regional hub hospital. The site’s natural characteristics—including its forests—along with the newly developed urban area and transportation networks, were well-suited to fulfill the role of an emerging regional hub hospital located just one hour from Seoul. We decided to focus our design on leveraging the region’s natural advantages, while also considering the ideal location and transportation access required of a hospital, as well as the surrounding infrastructure.
