Toaolam is the name of a community that signifies a sprout emerging from the center of the universe. A church, exhibition hall, retreat house, and research institute (priest’s residence) are situated on a prime site that faces the ridgeline of Mount Odae directly. The key challenges were to ensure the buildings settled naturally into the steep terrain and to incorporate the ridgeline of Mount Odae—which the site faces directly—into the interior of the complex. At the same time, the journey leading to the church, situated at the highest point, was designed so that the mountain path and the buildings, while occupying distinct spaces, would interact harmoniously to reveal the surrounding scenery. The goal was to create a building that could exist only on this specific site.
