Korean Air purchased the Songhyeon-dong site—a plot of land flanked by high walls next to Gyeongbokgung Palace that had served as staff housing for the U.S. Embassy prior to the 2000s. Korean Air then launched a design competition for this site, seeking proposals for a master plan and programs to revitalize the area. Because we all loved this land, we decided to envision Songhyeon-dong as a cultural landmark. A vibrant cultural hub that not only offers cultural experiences like exhibitions and performances but also integrates education and production; a space that ensures sustainability and the potential for micro-level change through small-scale development; a place that preserves the cultural heritage and traditional culture of Bukchon while upholding local identity; and a venue for exchange that welcomes people from around the world. It was a wonderful dream.
