Seoul Pop Arts Center

Seoul Pop Arts Center

This project involves the construction of a public cultural complex on the site of the former driver’s license testing center in Hannam-dong, featuring one venue for popular music and one for musicals to meet the demand for popular culture and the arts among Seoul citizens. To overcome the challenging site conditions—including an elevated highway encircling the site and a maximum building height of 20 meters—and to accommodate a capacity of 1,300 seats and 700 seats, respectively, most of the performance facilities had to be located underground. To address the inevitable challenges of natural lighting and ventilation, the southern side of the site—which was relatively easier to open up—was actively opened to the outside. Additionally, an open plaza for citizens was created on the rooftops of the performance venues, allowing them to serve as another outdoor performance space and a venue for public engagement.
