Seoul Fire Administration Town

Seoul Fire Administration Town

The site for the building is Mulpuregol, nestled against Eunpyeong New Town. With the exception of the eastern side, which opens onto the New Town, the site is surrounded on three sides by steep ridges, and the developed site is directly connected to the flow of the valley. The core of the design was to accommodate the three branches of the Seoul Fire Academy, and the challenge lay in the narrow dimensions of the site, where the mountains meet the land and it borders a watercourse. First, the overall orientation was opened toward the city on the east side, and the training field—the most critical function—was placed at the center of the site. By positioning the building so that its mass faces east, the steep ridge on the west side was allowed to flow through the site, creating a layered effect in the courtyards that follows the site’s varying levels. The continuity of the layered terrain is translated into platforms, presenting three distinct zones. These zones are connected via pilotis and decks, creating a fluid sequence of spaces. This sequence culminates in a central courtyard where the dormitories and amenities are clustered, designed to face the gateway leading back toward the city. The hope is that optimal conditions for fire drills will be provided and that a spatial continuity toward the city will be established in Mulpuregol.
