In its impoverished past, Taebaek served as the coal that fueled the locomotive racing toward today’s growth, and the local economy was indeed driven by the coal mining industry. Today, however, that industry has become obsolete, leaving the region’s former prosperity as nothing more than a memory, while the streets are becoming increasingly deserted. This project began as one of many efforts to revive the local economy. Faced with challenging ground conditions and the rugged terrain at the site—unfavorable circumstances—we embarked on this project as a challenge to develop a strong plan capable of overcoming doubts about its viability.
