M-Tower

M-Tower

Skyscrapers over 100 stories tall seem to be not merely architectural problems, but complex social issues where political, economic, and cultural elements are intricately intertwined—and subjects of hegemony. They demand that the building be the world’s tallest, unique, symbolic, and monumental, and ideally convey a Korean message—requirements that perhaps represent the greatest burden architects must overcome. It appears as though the execution of the project itself is a meticulously orchestrated show designed to produce a massive block of imagery. Perhaps, as is often the case with large and complex projects, the project feels somewhat abstract and insubstantial to the architect in its early stages, and the site tends to lose its contextual character, overwhelmed by the sheer mass of the building. The building defines the site. The project begins as if sculpting a trophy, envisioning the dream of that trophy shining at a glamorous awards ceremony. This marks the end of PHASE 01.
