Geoje Island is a city where pristine nature and industry coexist, blessed with exceptional natural conditions and home to two of Korea’s leading shipyards. However, due to a lack of shopping and cultural facilities suitable for its high-income residents, people often had to travel as far as the neighboring city of Busan, which was quite inconvenient. Gohyeon Port, currently the center of Geoje Island, is undergoing the “Big-Island” port redevelopment project to expand urban infrastructure and revitalize the old downtown area. The site of this project is located at the intersection of Geoje Island’s old downtown and the new development zone, right at the entrance to Big-Island. Today’s shopping malls are evolving beyond mere places for buying and selling goods into lifestyle shopping centers that serve as an extension of daily life. We have conceptualized this shopping mall using the “3W” design concept, which reflects these shopping trends and the region’s physical context.
