As a nationally recognized key research institution, the Institute for Basic Science has established excellence, openness, autonomy, and creativity as its core objectives. Basic science is characterized by diverse, undefined, and boundless research. Boundless research inherently requires facilities that enable free inquiry. Therefore, a new architectural typology is needed that breaks away from conventional research facility models and aligns with the unique characteristics of basic science research. To meet these requirements, we propose “Basic Square,” a design that remains true to the fundamentals of basic science research.
