A certain writer once said, “I wish to devote ten years to reading, ten years to traveling, and ten years to preserving and organizing.” Ever since humans began writing history, books have always served as the sole clue to recording the past. Through books, people have learned about the past and cultivated a broader perspective on the world. However, items that were once confined to preservation and organization and thus remained unseen are now recognized as a new medium that connects the past and present, bridges East and West, and links generations, thanks to libraries that house culture. Books are read by people through the act of opening them. Similarly, by being used by people, libraries provide spiritual nourishment that enriches the lives of the diverse social classes, generations, and local residents who use them. That is why libraries must remain open. We believe that, just as much as storing vast quantities of books and information, connecting those books and information to people through open architectural spaces will help realize the vision of the open library that future libraries aspire to.
