Gunsan Jungbu Church responds to the characteristics of the site and the urban context: the lower levels reflect the existing topography of the site, while the main sanctuary on the upper levels is positioned along an axis that traces the flow of the city and the legacy of the former church, symbolizing an ascent toward the heavens and growth within the city. A “community cross”—symbolizing the Christian cross—is positioned to allow pedestrians to enter naturally from any direction, whether from the apartment complex, the newly developed residential district, or the cultural street. Composed of continuous slabs, Golgotha Hill serves as a base that accommodates various activities and relaxation through four courtyards, engaging with the surrounding environment and connecting to the Sky Chapel via a gentle circulation path. This space functions as a gathering place for congregants while offering dramatic views of the existing church and the park created on the site. The exterior skin is also composed of continuous slabs, both inside and out. The star-shaped recesses embrace the Milky Way of the Shepherd’s Star in the night sky, and from the exterior, light flows through the interior atrium space to the River of Living Water in the front plaza.
