The Seoul National University College of Veterinary Medicine Biotechnology Research Building was completed in 2015, ten years after the project began in 2005. Located in front of the College of Veterinary Medicine, this building was planned as an advanced biotechnology research facility to enable “research on national disaster-type diseases, research on human gene phenotypes, and convergent technology research,” and was designed as an open form toward the campus to become a new face symbolizing the college. For a research space capable of growth and change, open programs were arranged on the lower floors to create a venue for exchange and communication with the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lower levels of the Biotechnology Research Building reflect the axis of the College of Veterinary Medicine, offering visual openness to campus pedestrians through soft linear forms, while the floating rectangular volume of the upper floors and the rhythmic interplay of vertical planes and lines were designed to give the building its own symbolic identity. The cafeteria and library are covered with curtain walls to create openness, while the faculty offices, seminar rooms, and conference rooms on the upper floors are equipped with sunshade louvers and U-glass to block and control southwest sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the third to fifth floors, laboratories are arranged for the National Mouse Phenomics Center and Stem Cell Research Center used by the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Research Institute for Veterinary Science, as well as the laboratories of the Veterinary Science Research Building. Given the nature of research facilities, the planning incorporates architectural access control through floor-by-floor zoning. On the floors primarily used by the two institutions, rest areas connecting the inside and outside were planned to facilitate exchange and community among researchers. The third floor was designed as a rooftop garden for the Research Institute for Veterinary Science with open views toward the campus, and the fourth floor as a rest area for the College of Veterinary Medicine linked to the surrounding greenery along the slopes of Mt. Gwanak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Disaster-Type Disease Research Center (ABSL-3) and the Mouse Phenomics Disease Center (SPF) used by the College of Veterinary Medicine are programs that require security and independence due to the nature of the laboratories. Accordingly, they were placed on the sixth floor with separate vertical circulation and floor-by-floor and zone-by-zone access control.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
