In Korea, plywood began being supplied to the UN forces stationed in Korea from 1957,&nbsp;emerging&nbsp;as a major export item that rapidly grew to account for over 10% of total exports within a decade. As U.S. orders surged for Daesung Timber as well, the company secured a government loan to build a new factory on&nbsp;Wolmido&nbsp;Island.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After opening in 1967,&nbsp;Junglim&nbsp;Architecture Research Institute undertook projects such as the Doosan Building design competition and the Chungju Fertilizer dormitory design before securing the Daesung Wood&nbsp;Wolmi&nbsp;Plywood Factory commission. Completed in 1970, the factory spanned a 40,000-pyeong (about 132,231 sq. m.) site with a building footprint of approximately 8,000&nbsp;pyeong&nbsp;(about 26,446 sq. m.) \u2014 an impressive scale for the time.
