The Korea Foundation for the Advancement of History is working to alleviate the housing burden and improve residential welfare for university students through its Happy Dormitory Support Project, which expands public dormitories. As part of this effort, the Ajou University Happy Dormitory being constructed follows the campus master plan while also being situated on a steep slope. The design focuses on creating a central hub for the site, building, and circulation routes, overcoming the varied elevation differences of the terrain. Simultaneously, it serves as a case study demonstrating the active use of appropriate BIM programs and 3D data throughout each design phase\u2014from conceptual design to basic design to detailed design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, in the site layout plan, horizontal and diagonal axes connecting Dasan Hall and Hyegang Hall at the northern end of the humanities and pharmacy areas, and Ilshin Hall and the International Dormitory at the eastern end, were reflected. This created a campus hub connecting student circulation routes, completing the master plan. Next, in the massing plan, dormitory facilities and amenities were separated into distinct forms on upper floors (3rd to 12th floors) and lower floors (B1 to B2). Particular emphasis was placed on inheriting the characteristic grid system evident in the facades of Ajou University campus buildings. The visual monotony that could arise from the repetitive structure of the dorm rooms was countered by introducing diagonal walls and arranging windows with a sense of depth towards the interior of the walls, creating a rhythmic effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, along the main access route approaching from the south lecture and practice areas, openness was secured through community stairs and pilotis spaces connecting to the open courtyard within the dormitory area. To address the steep terrain, multiple entrances were placed on the basement and first floors. These pathways connect to the second floor of the dormitory, where student convenience and welfare facilities are concentrated, through a series of stepped lounge spaces. This plan aims to create a symbolic and functionally specialized space. For maintenance, modular and repetitive structural planning based on the dormitory’s facility characteristics facilitates integrated management and comprehensive automated reviews. Safety was enhanced by optimizing rational circulation paths and ensuring consistency in evacuation plans. Pre-reviewing sanitary facilities within rooms enabled smoother communication with the client and contractor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
