The Gangnam Intermodal Transit Center is a project to create a large-scale, intermodal transfer hub beneath Yeongdongdaero Thoroughfare. It will include an integrated station connecting five metropolitan and local railway lines, a bus transfer terminal, and public and commercial facilities. In the international invited design competition held for this purpose, the proposal titled \u201cLightwalk\u201d by the Junglim Architecture Consortium \u2014 comprising Dominique Perrault Architecture (DPA), Space Group, Yooshin, Taejo Engineering, and Sunjin Engineering \u2014 was selected as the winning entry. Junglim Architecture was able to establish the project\u2019s vision and direction based on its understanding of the Samseong-dong and Jamsil areas gained from projects including COEX, combined with its analysis of the project site through the the Master Plan for the Yeongdongdaero Underground Complex Development Project. Together with DPA, which has extensive experience in underground space development, the team refined the concept and project direction through close collaboration between Paris and Seoul from the early stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core concept of the winning proposal is \u201cLightwalk.\u201d To bring comfort, safety, and pleasantness to this vast underground complex, the design introduces daylight down to the fourth basement level and enables natural ventilation. In contrast to most city roads dominated by vehicle traffic, this plan vertically separates pedestrian and vehicular circulations through the underground network, transforming Yeongdongdaero Thoroughfare into a pedestrian-oriented space. The resulting ground-level \u201cGreenland\u201d serves as a public park that accommodates festivals, sports, and various urban events while acting as a protective layer over the city\u2019s infrastructure. Crossing the center of Yeongdongdaero Thoroughfare, the \u201cLight Beam\u201d functions as a guiding axis, drawing visitors into the underground station and connecting every path of the subterranean space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gangnam Intermodal Transit Center presents a new vision for transportation infrastructure. Beyond the conventional, enclosed indoor station or mere transfer node, it will become an urban link between the surface and the underground \u2014 a vibrant, refreshing public space where citizens can rediscover comfort and daily life in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
