Standing on new ground, the museum serves both as a commemorative space for the founder and as a corporate exhibition hall.

Junglim Architecture’s work started with selecting the specific location for the museum within the SK Academy site. Once the site was chosen, the design focused on “restoration.” Efforts were made to replicate the original proportions and materials as faithfully as current laws and environmental conditions allow. Since the original buildings accumulated a long history at their previous site, building the museum involved more than simple relocation and restoration. Just as a transplanted tree carries the soil around its roots, the design sought to recover the spatial context embedded in the original site’s history within its new location. The main approach road, which for over sixty years embodied SK’s daily life and passage of time, is abstracted as a “reflecting pond,” beside which the main building is situated. The management building is reborn as a memorial hall, placed in a sunken podium with additional underground exhibition space that extends the exhibition flow of the main building.

Architect & Architecture
SK Heritage Museum

The SK Heritage Museum began with the relocation and restoration of the former main and administration buildings to the SK Academy site in Yongin, following the redevelopment of the original Sunkyung Textile site in Pyeong-dong, Suwon — SK’s birthplace.
